Vegan Protein Shakes

By Juliana Crimi, RD August 7 2025

These are shelf-stable or refrigerated, pre-mixed Vegan Protein Shakes containing plant-based protein, usually from pea protein isolate, often enriched with fiber and nutrients from vegetable and fruit extracts. They’re made for drinking straight from the bottle, no scooping or blending required.

Two Great Canadian Options:

  • Simply Protein Plant Protein Shake (Creamy Vanilla)
    • 330mL
    • 20g protein
    • 5g sugar
    • 8g fibre
    • 200 calories
    • Details: Pea protein, chicory root fiber, cocoa or vanilla flavor, plus veggie/fruit extracts like broccoli, spinach, papaya. Vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, Non-GMO, kosher.
  • Greenhouse Chocolate Protein Shake (Chocolate)
    • 330mL
    • 20g protein
    • 6g sugar
    • 4g fibre
    • 200 calories

Vegan Protein Shakes

When to Use Them

  1. Post-workout – Fast carbs + protein help with muscle recovery.
  2. On-the-go snack or meal topper – Great when you’re busy or traveling and don’t have time to make your own shake or have a full balanced meal.
  3. Mid-afternoon or evening snack – Satisfies hunger between meals or after workouts.
  4. Low appetite days – Easy to drink when you’re not hungry but still need protein.

These are ideal when you want convenience, portion control, and minimal prep.

Benefits and Considerations

Benefits:

  • Convenient — no prep, ideal fridge or pantry grab.
  • Portioned protein — typically 20 g per bottle.
  • Vegan- and allergen-friendly — free of dairy, gluten; often kosher and Non-GMO.

Keep in Mind:

  • Limited nutrients — these aren’t meal replacements; they deliver protein and fiber but lack broad micronutrients.
  • Cost per bottle — more expensive than powder per gram of protein.

Taste and Texture

Simply Protein – Smooth and mildly sweet with a subtle chocolate or vanilla flavour. Some may find a slight earthy aftertaste from the pea protein, but it’s well-masked by cocoa or vanilla. Thinner than a milkshake, but not watery. Best served chilled.

Greenhouse Chocolate – Creamier texture thanks to almond and oat base, closer to a chocolate milk. Richer flavour with a touch of natural sweetness (monk fruit, dates). No chalky finish. Smooth and easy to sip.

Tip: Always shake well before drinking, and enjoy chilled for best flavour.

Storage + Shelf Life

People often wonder if these need refrigeration or how long they last.

  • Both are best stored in the fridge, though Simply Protein is shelf-stable until opened.
  • Once opened, consume within 24–48 hours.
  • Perfect for stocking at work, in the gym bag, or for travel.

Verdict

If you're looking for ready‑to‑drink, vegan protein options available in Canada without powders, Simply Protein Plant Protein+ Shakes and Greenhouse Shakes are good choices.

FAQ's: Vegan Protein Shakes

Are vegan protein shakes a good meal replacement?

Not quite. While they provide protein and fibre, most pre-made vegan shakes (like Simply Protein or Greenhouse) are not nutritionally complete — they lack sufficient calories, fats, and a full range of vitamins and minerals to count as a full meal. They’re best used as a snack, supplement, or part of a balanced meal.

Do vegan protein shakes taste chalky?

Some do — especially if they’re pea-protein based. However, Simply Protein and Greenhouse have relatively smooth textures.

Are these shakes safe for kids or teens?

They’re generally safe in moderation, especially for active teens or picky eaters needing more protein. However, they shouldn’t replace whole meals regularly. Always check the label for allergens and consult with a healthcare provider or dietitian if unsure.
