If you love citrus desserts, you’re going to love these orange and poppy seed muffins. They’re light, fluffy, and packed with fresh orange flavour from both the zest and juice.

Ingredients

  • 1 ¾ cups flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons poppy seeds
  • Zest of 2 oranges
  • Juice of 1 orange
  • ⅓ cup oil
  • 1 egg
  • ⅓ cup maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup Greek yogurt

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line or grease a muffin tin.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and poppy seeds.
  3. Mix wet ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk the egg, oil, maple syrup, vanilla, Greek yogurt, orange zest, and orange juice until smooth.
  4. Combine: Add the dry ingredients to the wet and stir until just combined—don’t over mix.
  5. Bake: Divide the batter evenly into the muffin tin. Bake for 18–22 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Cool & enjoy: Let the muffins cool slightly before serving.

Tips for the Best Orange and Poppy Seed Muffins

  • Use freshly squeezed orange juice for the best flavour.
  • Don’t skip the zest—it’s where most of the orange flavour comes from.
  • For extra sweetness, drizzle with a light orange glaze (powdered sugar + orange juice).

Storage

  • Room temperature: Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • Fridge: Keeps well for up to 5 days.
  • Freezer: Freeze in a freezer-safe bag or container for up to 2 months. Reheat in the microwave or oven before serving.

FAQs: Orange and Poppy Seed Muffins

Can I make these muffins gluten-free?

Yes, just substitute with a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend.

Can I swap the maple syrup?

Honey works too, though it will slightly change the flavour.

Can I add a glaze?

Absolutely! A simple orange glaze makes these muffins extra special for brunch.\

These orange and poppy seed muffins are the perfect balance of citrusy freshness and wholesome sweetness. Light, moist, and so easy to make, they’re a recipe you’ll want to bake on repeat.
