How to Stop Eating When Bored

By Juliana Crimi, RD February 11 2025

Eating out of boredom is a common challenge that many people face. While it’s normal to occasionally snack without hunger, making it a regular habit can lead to overeating and discomfort.

Let's go over some tips on how to stop eating when bored.

Here are some practical strategies from a dietitian to help you break the cycle of boredom eating and build healthier habits.

1. Identify Triggers

Take a moment to recognize when and why you’re reaching for food. Are you eating because you’re truly hungry, or is it out of boredom, stress, or habit? Understanding your triggers is the first step in addressing them.

2. Stay Hydrated

Thirst can be mistaken for hunger. Keep a water bottle nearby and sip throughout the day. If plain water feels boring, try herbal tea, sparkling water, or water infused with fresh fruit for added flavour.

3. Keep Your Hands Busy

Find activities that engage your hands and mind to distract you from snacking. This could include hobbies like knitting, journaling, drawing, or solving puzzles. Keeping busy helps reduce the urge to eat out of boredom.

4. Opt for Healthy Snacks

If you’re truly hungry, make intentional choices with nutrient-dense snacks. Prepare options like cut vegetables with hummus, a handful of nuts, or a piece of fruit. These snacks will satisfy hunger without leading to overeating. Remember when possible to pair a carbohydrate food with a protein for sustained energy levels.

5. Practice Mindful Eating

If you do decide to snack, do so mindfully. Sit down, eat slowly, and focus on the flavours and textures of your food. Avoid eating while watching TV or scrolling on your phone, as this can lead to mindless overeating.

6. Create a Boredom Toolkit

Build a list of non-food activities to turn to when boredom strikes. Include things like going for a walk, calling a friend, organizing a space, or trying a quick workout. Having alternatives ready makes it easier to avoid the snack cupboard.

7. Practice Self-Compassion

Breaking the habit of eating out of boredom takes time. If you slip up, avoid guilt and focus on moving forward with your goals. Progress, not perfection, is key.

The Bottom Line: How to Stop Eating When Bored

Eating out of boredom is a habit that can be replaced with healthier alternatives and mindful practices. By staying hydrated, engaging in activities, and planning your meals, you can take control of your eating habits and focus on nourishing your body in a meaningful way.
