String beans also known as green beans are one of the most versatile vegetables you can cook. They’re affordable, quick to prepare, and can taste amazing when seasoned well.

Why String Beans Are a Great Vegetable

String beans are:

  • Naturally low in calories
  • A good source of fiber
  • Rich in vitamins A, C, and K

How to Prepare String Beans Before Cooking

Before cooking, always:

  1. Rinse string beans under cold water
  2. Trim off the stem ends
  3. Pat dry (especially important for roasting or air frying)

You can use fresh or frozen string beans for most of these methods (tips included below).

1. How to Boil String Beans

Boiled string beans are soft, tender, and great as a base for seasoning.

How to Boil String Beans

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil
  2. Add string beans
  3. Boil for 4–6 minutes (fresh) or 5–7 minutes (frozen)
  4. Drain and immediately season

Best Seasonings for Boiled String Beans

Boiled vegetables need fat + acid + salt:

  • Olive oil or butter
  • Garlic powder or fresh garlic
  • Lemon juice or red wine vinegar
  • Salt and black pepper

Flavor upgrades:

  • Parmesan cheese
  • Everything bagel seasoning
  • Soy sauce + sesame oil

2. Oven Roasted String Beans

How to Roast String Beans in the Oven

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C)
  2. Toss string beans with olive oil and seasonings
  3. Spread on a baking sheet in a single layer
  4. Roast for 18–22 minutes, flipping halfway

Best Seasoning Combinations for Roasted String Beans

  • Garlic + Parmesan
  • Smoked paprika + onion powder
  • Lemon zest + black pepper
  • Chili flakes + honey drizzle

Tip: Avoid overcrowding the pan. This helps them crisp instead of steam.

3. Air Fryer String Beans (Fast & Extra Crispy)

Air frying is one of the quickest ways to make string beans taste amazing.

How to Cook String Beans in the Air Fryer

  1. Preheat air fryer to 390°F (200°C)
  2. Toss beans with olive oil and seasonings
  3. Air fry for 8–10 minutes, shaking halfway

Air Fryer Seasoning Ideas

  • Garlic powder + paprika
  • Ranch seasoning
  • Nutritional yeast + salt
  • Cajun seasoning

Finish with a squeeze of lemon or a sprinkle of cheese.

4. Breaded String Beans

These crispy string bean fries are a hit with kids and adults.

How to Make Breaded String Beans

You’ll need:

  • Fresh string beans
  • 1–2 eggs, beaten
  • Flour
  • Breadcrumbs or panko
  • Salt, pepper, garlic powder

Step-by-Step

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F or air fryer to 400°F
  2. Dip string beans in egg
  3. Coat in flour, then breadcrumbs
  4. Arrange in a single layer
  5. Bake 15–18 minutes or air fry 8–10 minutes

Seasoning Ideas for Breaded String Beans

  • Italian seasoning + parmesan
  • Paprika + garlic powder
  • Lemon pepper

Serve with marinara, ranch, or honey mustard for dipping.

How to Make Vegetables Taste Good (Key Tips)

If you think you don’t like vegetables, it’s often about how they’re cooked:

  • Don’t skip the seasonings
  • Add acid (lemon, vinegar)
  • Cook them different ways

Vegetables don’t need to be boring!

Fresh vs Frozen String Beans

  • Fresh: Best for roasting and air frying
  • Frozen: Great for boiling or sautéing (no need to thaw for boiling)

If using frozen for roasting or air frying, pat dry first.

Final Thoughts

There are so many easy ways to cook string beans from simple boiled versions to crispy air fryer and breaded fries. With the right seasonings, green beans can become a favourite side dish instead of an afterthought.
