Hemp Protein vs. Whey Protein

By Juliana Crimi, RD February 9 2026

When it comes to protein powders, hemp protein vs. whey protein are two popular options but they aren’t created equal. Here’s what you need to know so you can choose the one that best fits your nutrition and lifestyle.

What They Are

  • Whey Protein: A dairy-based protein derived from milk during cheese production. It’s rich in essential amino acids, particularly leucine, which is important for muscle growth.
  • Hemp Protein: A plant-based protein made from ground hemp seeds. It contains all nine essential amino acids, though in slightly lower amounts compared to whey.

Protein Quality

  • Whey is considered a “complete protein” with a high biological value, meaning your body absorbs and uses it efficiently.
  • Hemp is also complete but has a lower leucine content, which may make it slightly less effective for building muscle compared to whey.

Digestion and Allergies

  • Whey: Fast-digesting but contains lactose, which can be problematic for those who are lactose intolerant or allergic to dairy.
  • Hemp: Easily digestible and hypoallergenic. It’s ideal for plant-based diets and those with dairy sensitivities.

Health Benefits

  • Whey: Excellent for muscle recovery, strength training, and supporting overall protein needs.
  • Hemp: Supports heart health and digestion due to fiber and omega-3 content, while providing plant-based protein.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Choose Whey if: You want maximum protein per scoop, are focused on muscle building, and don’t have dairy sensitivities.
  • Choose Hemp if: You follow a plant-based diet, want extra fiber and minerals, or need a hypoallergenic protein source.

Nutrition Comparison

When comparing whey and hemp protein, whey protein provides more protein per serving, making it ideal for muscle building and post-workout recovery. Hemp protein, on the other hand, offers a slightly lower protein content but comes with the added benefits of fiber, healthy fats, and minerals like magnesium and iron. This makes hemp a great choice for plant-based diets, supporting digestion, and adding nutritional value beyond just protein.

Price Comparison

  • Whey: Depending on the size and brand, whey proteins supplements can range from $30 - $120 per tub.
  • Hemp: Again price is dependent on size and brand but typically cheaper than whey. Price can range from $10-45 per tub.

Dietitian Note: Hemp Protein vs. Whey Protein

One protein isn’t inherently “better” than the other; it really depends on your individual needs. Factors like daily protein requirements, allergies or intolerances, dietary preferences, activity level, and fitness goals all play a role in choosing the right protein for you.

Whey may be more convenient for muscle building, while hemp can add fiber and plant-based nutrients. The best choice is the one that fits your lifestyle and supports your overall nutrition.
