Does Almond Milk Cause Constipation?

By Juliana Crimi, RD January 15 2026

Almond milk is a popular dairy alternative, especially for people who are lactose intolerant or prefer plant-based options. But a common question that comes up is whether almond milk can cause constipation.

The short answer: for most people, almond milk does not cause constipation but there are a few situations where it might contribute.

Let’s break it down.

2 glasses of almond milk with a bowl of almonds on the side

Almond Milk and Constipation: What’s the Connection?

Constipation is usually influenced by a combination of:

  • Fiber intake
  • Fluid intake
  • Overall diet pattern
  • Individual gut sensitivity

Almond milk itself is very low in fiber, especially compared to whole almonds.

Fiber content

  • Unsweetened almond milk: ~0–1 g fiber per cup
  • Whole almonds: ~3–4 g fiber per ounce

This means almond milk doesn’t add much fiber, but it also isn’t inherently constipating.

When Almond Milk Might Contribute to Constipation

1. Replacing Higher-Fiber Foods

If almond milk replaces:

  • Cow’s milk paired with high-fiber cereal
  • Smoothies that previously included fruits, seeds, or oats

…without adding fiber elsewhere, total daily fiber intake may drop.

2. Low Fluid Intake Overall

Almond milk is mostly water, but constipation can occur if:

  • Total fluid intake is low
  • Almond milk replaces water rather than adding to fluids

3. Added Ingredients

Some almond milks contain:

  • Thickeners or gums (like carrageenan or guar gum)
  • These don’t bother most people, but a small number may notice digestive changes

4. Individual Digestive Sensitivity

Everyone’s gut is different. Some people may notice:

  • Slower digestion
  • Bloating or changes in stool patterns

This doesn’t mean almond milk is “bad” — just that it may not be the best choice for that individual.

Dietitian Tip: It’s About the Whole Meal

Rather than focusing on almond milk alone, look at the entire pattern:

  • Are you getting enough fiber (25–38 g/day depending on needs)?
  • Are you drinking enough fluids?
  • Are meals balanced with carbs, protein, and fat?

Constipation is rarely caused by one single food.

Should You Avoid Almond Milk If You’re Constipated?

For most people: no.

You likely don’t need to cut out almond milk — instead:

  • Add fiber-rich foods
  • Increase fluids
  • Pair almond milk with whole foods

If constipation persists, it’s worth looking at your overall diet and lifestyle rather than singling out almond milk.

Bottom Line: Does Almond Milk Cause Constipation?

  • Almond milk does not typically cause constipation
  • It’s low in fiber, so balance matters
  • Pair it with fiber-rich foods for gut health
