Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip Cookies

If you love the classic peanut butter cookies, you are going to be obsessed with this chocolate peanut butter chip cookie version.

I grew up loving anything peanut butter and so did my younger brother, so these cookies were a fun twist we both loved. They are soft, chocolatey, and have just the right amount of sweetness.

These are a bit more on the crumbly side which makes them perfect for dunking into milk or pairing with a cozy cup of tea.

7 cookies on a plate

Ingredients

  • 1 cup natural peanut butter
  • 1 egg
  • ⅓ cup maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ⅓ cup whole wheat flour
  • ⅓ cup dark chocolate chips
ingredients laid out on table

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper

2. Mix the wet ingredients: In a medium bowl, stir together the peanut butter, egg, maple syrup, and vanilla until smooth

3. Add the dry ingredients: In a separate bowl add in the cocoa powder, salt, and whole wheat flour. Mix and then add to the wet ingredients.

4. Fold in chocolate chips: Add the chocolate chips and mix until evenly combined

5. Roll and bake: Roll the dough into balls and place on your baking sheet. You should get around 12 to 15 cookies depending on size. Bake for 10 minutes

6. Press and cool: Once out of the oven, lightly press the tops of each cookie with a fork. Let cool before eating. They will firm up as they sit but are on the crumblier side.

Storage

Keep cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days. They also freeze well if you want to save some for later.

Variations

  • Use almond or cashew butter instead of peanut butter
  • Add chopped nuts for extra crunch
  • Mix in white chocolate chips or a sprinkle of cinnamon for a flavour twist

FAQs

Can I use regular peanut butter?

Natural peanut butter works best for this recipe because it is thinner and has no added sugar or oils. If you use regular, the texture might change slightly.

Are these cookies gluten free?

They are not, but you can try swapping the whole wheat flour for a 1 to 1 gluten free baking blend.

Why are they a bit crumbly?

That is the nature of this recipe. They are soft but delicate, kind of like a brownie cookie. Let them cool before moving for best results.
